They are the only organization that does a comprehensive study on each state’s laws on sex trafficking. Each state is graded based on six key components; criminalization for the exploitation of minors, criminal penalties for buyers, traffickers, facilitators, protection of victims and criminal justice tools to investigate and prosecute. Depending on whether a state has the following will determine what letter grade they receive. Shared Hope International has raised the letter grade in nine states so far. They help to create bills, advocate for the bill and testify for the bill. An example of this is the Kids Are Not For Sale bill that was passed in Virginia in 2015. Shared Hope International collaborated with prosecutors and advocates to write the bill, used their website to promote the bill and rallied with citizens to advocate for the bill to be passed. Once the bill was passed in April of 2015 two traffickers were arrested in September 2015 and convicted under the new law. Although, unofficial screenings have been developed and many focus on red flags that are common in victims of sex trafficking. In many ways, sex trafficking victims can present like intimate partner violence victims. With that being said, a red flag that can stand out is if the victim is accompanied by a ‘boyfriend’ that insists on answering all questions and providing all the information for the victim. Other examples of red flags include providing a question health history, being disoriented, lack of proper identification and not attending school. Not only are there historical red flags, but also medical conditions and behavioral conditions that present as red flags in sex trafficking victims. Medical conditions that are red flags include frequent visits for reproduction conditions, sexually transmitted infections, genital infections, and multiple pregnancies, miscarriages or abortions. As for behavioral red flags, those can present as being withdrawn, fearful and agitated. Many victims present physical injuries, expensive clothing, poor dentition and nutrition and even tattoos that represent the ‘branding’ of their trafficker.
