The process of successfully shaping a dog’s behavior to go to the mailbox from the front door, return with clean intact mails, and drop it at the trainer feet will be done in a long but simple chain. A verbal command will be given to the dog to get the mail to see if the behavior is already there. When it is established that the dog has no formal training, the shaping process will begin. The first thing is to use task analysis to break down the task into its elements (Chance, 2014, p.1740). The dog will be walked back to the front door to the welcome mat and asked to sit. The dog will then be commanded to drop the mail and a treat will be given regardless of the condition of the mail. At this point the first two chain will be performed and a primary reinforcement will be given until it is done without a flaw (Chance, 2014, p175). The last part of the chain will then be

I never thought that reading a book on reinforcement would be so handy. “Don’t Shoot The Dog! The New Art of Teaching and Training” by Karen Pryor was the book that opened my eyes to new was of reinforcement. I in no way truly understood what reinforcement was and how powerful it truly is. The book had six rather lengthy chapters “Reinforcement: better than rewards”, “Shaping: developing super performance without strain or pain”, “Stimulus control: cooperation without coercion”, “Untraining: Using reinforcement to get rid of behavior you don’t want”, and “Reinforcement in the real world”, “Clicker Training: A new technology”.…

Using positive reinforcement to encourage a child behavior. For example if a child does their homework without being told. I would be using positive reinforcement by praise or rewarding them. I would tell the child, that they will get extra tv time every time they don't have to be told to their homework, that would be their award. For praise them, I would keep telling how great of a student they are, every time they do that action.…

For my clicker training project I used my friends cat Reggie, who is a 4 year old Domestic Short Hair, neutered male. Throughout the training, I didn't do a lot of sessions outside for new learning techniques due to the fact that Reggie tends to get distracted especially from other people and animals. It also seemed that smaller, quieter places, like inside the barn, allowed Reggie to focus easier on my cues. Food as well as praise tends to be a huge motivator for Reggie so changing his rewards sometimes allowed him to stay focused on the task at hand. The issue with this was that some weeks he would be doing really well learning the commands and techniques but the next week he refused to learn or do anything.…

Treat or praise? Have you ever wondered what goes through a dog's mind ? My passion and aspiration to be a veterinarian have led me to research these exact behaviors. I chose to look into the behaviors’ of multiple untrained canines and their desire for human praise or edible treat when performing a behavior well. I believe if the number of completed tasks asked to an untrained adult dog changes when given a food reward or praise is compared, then the dogs rewarded with food will complete more tasks.…
