Shakespeare's plays and poems were written during the English Renaissance; he wrote alongside other remarkable writers such as Sir Philip Sidney, John Milton, Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe and many others. Shakespeare has remained a preeminent figure who wrote 37 plays and 150 sonnets with some of his famous tragedies including Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, and Othello. Each generation creates their own interpretation regarding Shakespeare’s work. All nations with theatrical conventions can agree that Shakespeare is beyond dispute the greatest playwright of all time. This paper will examine Shakespeare's influence on the English Theater and his importance in theater history.

Many people have become familiar with Romeo and Juliet through different renditions of movies and live performances in theater. Each new rendition brings light to this tragic play and new admirers to Shakespeare's work.
But carping over inevitable textual cuts should not obscure the fact that both Zeffirelli and Luhrmann brought a freshness of vision to a four-hundred-year-old play, translated it into a new medium, and in each case won for Shakespeare's tragic story a new generation of enthusiastic admirers.
