The Shadow Of Hate Analysis

Within the first few moments of the "The Shadow of Hate," it began with a parade of white hooded individuals expressing their hate against other races. Right from the start, I assumed this 40-minute documentary was going to pertain to the KKK, and their reign of terror on African Americans. Movies that related to my assumptions of what this video was going to withhold were; Glory Road, Coach Carter, and Remember the Titans. Prejudice and discrimination between whites and blacks was the major issue in society. But as the video continued, it appeared to display more than just racism between blacks and whites, but all races.

To me, this story was the most distinct knowing it did not involve whites, just the Jewish people themselves. A paper factory owned by a Jewish man named Leo Frank had a staff of all Jewish women. It was shocking to me that they were only paid a dollar and 50 cents a week. But one day, when a girl by the name of Mary Phagan, came into work on a Friday to pick up her paycheck she was beaten to death by the owner. I'm am not sure why he did what he did and if he did anything to the rest of his staff. But for months/years there were cases about what they were going to do to him and how to proceed. He was then lynched. The shocking part was that people were ripping off parts of his clothes to keep remembering what a horrible man he was. What was also eerie to me was that young girls had come up with a song about it that went "Little Mary Phagan went to work one day, little did she know the Jew would take her life away." and danced around chanting it.

One similarity between most of these stories was that most of it was caused by the white people. There were never any cases or stories of any two different cultures that had to do with racism. Racism is still alive today, it is just not as severe, it still occurs in everyday

Ingalls 1 Cody Ingalls Professor Rhodes Introduction to Ethics April 15th, 2017 Case Study The debate surrounding abortion rights presents many ethical dilemmas, and is rarely a black and white issue, which makes it difficult to label all abortions as moral or immoral. Many people who are opposed to abortion are willing to support it in certain situations, such as in the case of rape, incest, or the endangerment of a mother’s life. One of these situations is described in the case study “Conceived in Violence, Born in Hate,” an overview of a rape and assault victim who was forcibly impregnated and decided to carry the child to term. The case raises interesting questions about the morality of abortions in the case of rape, and the autonomy of…

This type of lynching was characterized by a mob burning the body as well as distributing the slashed off toes, fingers, ears, as well as other types of flesh which occurred in many places during the time. The writer’s research has also concluded that more than a third of the alleged assault cases were indeed false. Crimes against black people hold little to no importance when compared to crimes against white people. Many of the crimes that are being committed against African Americans stem that stem from white people…

In Ben Collins’ “How Long The Internet Can Run On Hate,” his claim is "The web is an economy of its own that now runs on collective shaming and fear under the fake auspices of free speech, self-expression, and the collective speech." He cites a page on Reddit to support his claim, which shows that some Reddit users poked fun at overweight people. The most ridiculous thing is that they think it will stimulate obese people to lose weight. But the reality is that public shaming does not work, overweight people who faced discrimination are more likely to gain weight. In another word, those hypocritical people just tend to gain superiority from the defects of others.…

The horrors of segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, and the struggle against oppressors all brought to light the darkness and hypocrisy behind the flag which stood for equal rights for all. The part which frightens me the most is the fact that we thought we progressed as a nation past racism, yet the recent rumblings in the political and social sphere show that we still have much work to do. In Eyes on the Prize, Emmett Till, nonviolence with MLK Jr., and white culture are topics which stood out to me the most for early reaction towards the documentary. The image of Emmett Till and his brutally mutilated body under a picture of him smiling will forever be burned into my memory.…

Even though nobody knew the reason for this punishment, many whites gathered around to watch and started to beat the men with whatever they could get their hands on just because a few people’s anger traveled throughout the mob (“Strange Fruit: Anniversary of a Lynching,” NPR radio diaries). This is an example of mob mentality because people had the courage to beat the men when in a group, but alone, they would not have been nearly as mad or willing to show their anger. A photo taken at this lynching shows that white people of all kinds (men, women, children, and even pregnant women) came to this lynching. It shows that this form of punishment was not uncommon to these people, which is shown as a result of their neutral faces. The picture ultimately shows how the black people were viewed according to the…

A hate crime is an offense, usually violent, motivated by the prejudice of one specific status a single individual holds, i.e., sexual orientation, religion, gender, ethnicity, ect. These crimes are driven simply because of the hatred one person feels towards another. An individual is targeted because of something about themselves a single person or group of people do not approve of. Hate crimes are the highest priority of the FBI’s Civil Rights program and each year an estimated 1,200 crimes are reported, however, the number is most likely higher due to underreported cases. In 2012, an astonishing 5,796 were committed.…

A hate-based society is common in the fictional novel 1984 by George Orwell and in our real world, a hate-based society is not an irrational idea. The idea of a hate-based society is founded on fear, power, and of course, hatred. I happen to believe that a society based off hatred and suffering can survive, but that does not mean I would want to live in that particularly shaped society such as Winston Smith did in 1984. In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, a character named O’brien says, “Old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love and justice.…
