Censorship In Shade's Children

In the novel Shade’s Children by Garth Nix, a strong representation of friendship is demonstrated. In the book, a small boy named Gold-Eye has run away from his base camp once he had turned fifteen, which was just around the time of the change. The reason he was nicknamed Gold-Eye was because the change has placed an effect on his eyes, making them into a gold color. While his eyes are gold, they also have a special power. What he refers to as the “soon to be now”, meaning he can see into the future. Though he cannot control this ability, he demonstrated throughout the novel his attempt in gaining control over it. The fact that it is all circled around taking these young teens to a meat factory, can probably be alarming for some people. The U.S Constitution states “Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech” (Amendment 1). Laws can also be defined as banned items in some cases. In this case, it refers to this novel. It is titled science fiction for a reason, it’s not real. So if it’s all made up, why do people feel the need to ban it? What everyone thinks nowadays is that if we can stop letting our children read foul things such as this, then they will grow up to be a better civilization. But what they are saying is wrong. If we ban books due to a few bad words or some “sensitive topics”, then our children will never grow up knowing right from wrong. The authors of these books put their hard work, time, and dedication into writing these books. Not because they have to, but because they can. So for them to put their ideas out there into the world only for them to get banned, it’s straight up violating the first amendment. If freedom of speech was really so important, then we wouldn’t have to ban books anywhere, we could let people read whatever they
