When someone thinks of child molesters or rapists, the first thought is to lock them up because there is no help for them, they are sick. How can anyone be attracted to a child? How can anyone rape someone? How can anyone turn out this way? Normally people don’t consider the back stories of these perpetrators, because they have committed awful acts. We consider these people sexual deviants. Sexual deviance is sexual behavior that diverges from the norm, while that is not always a bad or unhealthy thing, it can be problematic if you are harming someone. Though there is not one specific trigger to becoming a sexual deviant there are many layers in which one acquires this behavior. Childhood trauma is the common link between all deviants, sexual or not. It is important to note that just because someone has trauma in their childhood does not mean that they will turn into a sexual deviant. It is also important to recognize that there is no excuse for this type of behavior. Though there is no excuse for any sexual assault, it is important to ask these questions about his/her background to be able to help both victim and perpetrator. With the knowledge of what the home life was we can use it to raise our children, to spot warning signs of those who exhibit deviant behavior, and those who show abuse signs. These deviants and victims have something to tell and can educate us on how to better protect our children. Sexual deviants at one time were children who didn’t have a strong adult figure in their life who would protect them and show them how to be a kind decent human. They learned how to act in a way which society deems unfit and cast them aside. If we offered better services not only in the mental health field but also in state services, we would see a decline in such harsh behaviors exhibited by deviants. With these services, we would see a flourish in our communities and less struggle in single parent households. Education also plays a big part in how these deviants turn out. If we can expand education to give the poor community a hand up, it would show that we don’t discount them. A lot of these deviants felt discounted as children. If we can make everyone feel important we would see these awful behaviors
