The contemporary wave of feminism has created vast social change on how sexual assaults are defined and treated by legal professionals and society. The main goals of feminism are to redefine the patriarchal dogma on the rate, causes and effects of rape (Chasteen, 2001, pp. 102-103). This is largely done by framing rape as a social problem that has historically remained unaddressed by the dominant male discourse. From their perspective, it is the most extreme expression of male power and gender inequality (Chasteen, 2001, p. 106). As such, rape is redefined as a crime against women that is a direct and almost absolute consequence of the male needs for dominance and aggression (Chasteen, 2001, p. 106).…
Tyler Apt Hartman 80205-GAH 2116-006 28 September 2016 Rape: A Serious Issue Rape is a serious social and public issue in the United States. Women are usually the victims of rape, while men are usually the offenders. The majority of women are sexually assaulted by men who they are familiar with. Women are far less likely to report a rape if they know the person who assaulted them.…
Rape and sexual assault are relevant topics in today’s society. One in six women in the United States “has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime” (“Effects”). The perpetrators are often not prosecuted or expected to take responsibility for their actions. For example, in the rape case “Turner vs. the People,” Stanford Swimmer, Brock Turner, was accused and found guilty of three felony counts of sexual assault and only spent three months in jail, far less than the maximum fourteen years that he could have faced (Stack). Even though he raped an unconscious woman, Brock Turner was only sentenced to six months because, according to the judge: “A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him” (Stack).…
Of those who report, only 8% of sexual assault accusations reach a court-marital hearing, and only 5% result in conviction. These men and women who survive…
Through the course of this essay about sexual assault, it will start by summarizing the content of the presentation, then linking and viewing the content through the lens of theories related to the course content, and finally suggesting ways to overcomes this problem in Educational context The presentation started by defining what is sexual assault and the prevalent myths in our society. ‘’Sexual assault is any involuntary sexual act in which a person is coerced or physically forced to engage against their will, or any non-consensual sexual touching of a person. ’’ Sexual Assault." While more than half of sexual assaults against women of college age occur off campus, on campus assaults are a problem that college and universities can and should do more to address. The best statistics show there is a correlation between 3 factors, alcohol use, sorority membership, and class status, and sexual assault on campus. To combat these trends colleges and universities need to address these factors while taking into account that any measures they take not simply move the problem from campus to off campus locations. This means that the measures taken should be centered on raising awareness, encouraging responsibility, and holding offenders accountable in a just way, while also addressing the campus code of conduct.…

The rational focus of crime differs for serious crimes as compared to minor crimes. Serious crimes such as sexual assault are more punitive than property crimes. Sexual assault cases are taken seriously, however, the victims are ignored in sexual assault cases. The justice system continues to avoid victims, many victims feel re-victimized because the system denies them from having their voices heard (McGlynn, 2011, p.825). This paper will focus on crimes of sexual assault and the challenges of the contemporary systems of justice and how restorative justice allows for opportunities of healing.…
Through such extreme lack of sensitivity and training the investigation may draw inconclusive, this is why it should be left to the trained professionals to head an assault investigation. In the article written by Jed Rubenfeld on the first page states that in 2007 the department of justice found that about one in ten undergraduate women had been raped at their college. No one should be raped or violated, especially in their home which most times are university campuses. They should be safe to learn, succeed and excel in a safe environment. She also states that only five percent or less of the victims report the assault to the police.…
“In 2013, 59.4 percent of full-time college students ages 18 and 22 drank alcohol in the past month compared with 50.6 percent of other persons of the same age” (“College Drinking”). Alcohol abuse misleads the causes of sexual assault. Sexual assault is very common on college campuses due to easy access of alcohol. Too much drinking could lead to destroying a person's inner body parts. In the meantime, college campuses should be more strict enforcing the rules and regulations about drinking.…
The criminal justice system is known for having an open mind while on the job. These people are supposed to “‘check their personal attitudes at the door’ when coming to work” (Rich, & Seffrin, 2012). Most of the time law enforcement and other members of the criminal justice system are able to be professional and not bring personal biases into the job. There are times; however, where law enforce bring their objectives to the job. This can be seen when there is a rape case.…
Police Perceptions Research by Venama (2014) noted low levels of reporting including the examination of law enforcement perspectives on sexual assault and how those perceptions may influence decision making warrant more exploration. Sleath and Bull (2017) who conducted a systematic review over 24 published articles regarding police perceptions of rape victims and the impact on case decision making found that some police officers hold problematic attitudes about rape victims, although this is frequently at a low level. What is still unclear, according to Sleath and Bull (2017) is how the assessment of victim credibility, such as characteristics of the victim, or alcohol intoxication, impacts the police investigative decision making process…
Sexual assault is bad no matter what gender and it needs to be stopped, the first step to this would be the gender differences and the unbelievable amounts of women who are assaulted. Women also experience domestic violence, 1 in 5 women are victims of physical abuse/violence. In addition, about a third of these women were killed with violence due to their male partners.…
One may seem that death penalty for sexual assault crimes is not adequate. It does not show other people that this is a big matter, nor does it show them that women are not sexual objects. They should be known for the crime they did, they should stay alive and live with what they have done to these innocent women who were just walking down the street or, just going to see a movie. Killing these people does not leave an impact on society. Letting them be known will make a big impact.…
Major technological advances in our time have allowed us to reach an unprecedented level of mass communication and media. This new connection with the world around us has given us a sense of freedom yet also promote a set of dangers – latent dysfunctions which, unless exposed and changed, will turn our media into a platform for victim blaming and trivializing sexual abuse. I believe that mass media helps perpetuate rape culture and, in this paper, I will examine the influence of popular media and news coverage to further solidify my argument. To fully understand the concepts in which I am discussing, I will clarify the definitions of mass communication and rape culture. Mass communication can be considered the “message transmission from…
