The First Step in Establishing Therapeutic Relationships
Introduction
In this paper I’ll be discussing a learning goal I’d like to achieve as a student Registered Nurse, which will help me develop and grow into the nursing profession. To reach my learning goal, I’ll identify two SMART goals and describe a resource through which I can better my understanding of the identified area of practice. By establishing learning goals I can continually improve my practice and meet the College of Nurses of Ontario’s practice standards, by which Registered Nurse practice is guided in Ontario.

This resource is excellent training for a student Registered Nurse on establishing therapeutic relationships; it outlines the practice standards to which I’ll be beholden after becoming a Registered Nurse and clearly outlines expectations for Registered Nurses. The learning module shows the steps nurses must take to follow the practice standard. For example, the learning module identifies ways to establish therapeutic communication by listening carefully to the client’s needs and avoiding giving advice immediately or diminishing their feelings, and ensuring that the client understands how the healthcare team will be involved in providing their care. Establishing trust is the first component of building a therapeutic relationship, and is thus essential for a student Registered Nurse to practise. By establishing trust between the nurse and the client, better client outcomes can be achieved.
