Serene State University Crisis Case Study

When talking about a crisis, a company should never consider if it is going to happen, but be alert of when it is going to happen. Crisis are unavoidable, and that is why it is really important that companies, or in this case a University, are prepared to confront this type of situation. A crisis could be both a threat, or an opportunity depending on how it is handled. In this report we are going to analyze the case that took place in Serene State University, in order to help companies that may find themselves in a similar situation in the future.
In order to learn from this case, it is necessary to first expose what they did wrong. From my point of view, the big mistake they made was the way the confronted the situation. They just focus on justifying themselves in front of the audience, instead of trying to be truthful and transparent with their publics. They were not arguing that Mrs. Hanzout did not deserve her scholarship, but the fact that she was offered to it without even applying for it. She has a 3.6 GPA and a good reputation as a leader in her sorority. Those are really good qualities, but there is probably more than one girl that meets these abilities, maybe some even applied for a scholarship, and they did not get it. The university could have prevented this controversial situation. Even if she deserved the scholarship, they should have taken into consideration that she is the daughter of a government official, so they should have realized that awarding her without applying for the scholarship was going to look quite suspicious. They could have suggested her to apply for the scholarship due to her good qualities.
