Children’s development should be looked at in a holistic way this is very important. A holistic approach considers the whole part of something rather than a small fraction of it.

These include their background,health,environment in which they grow up. Each of these affects all areas of development. Some personal factors are children’s health. If children suffer from poor health or a physical disability or impairment it could restrict their development opportunities. An example is if a child has a medical condition or impairment they would be less able to participate in some activities than other children. This could affect their physical development and also restrict social activities such as playing with their friends in the playground. Their emotional development may also be affected this depends on the extent to which they have been affected. Adults in schools should be aware of how pupils may be affected this is very important. There have been a number of theories of development and many of them have an influence in the way in which we approach our work with children. Many psychologists believe that a child's ability is innate whilst others feel that it all depends on the opportunities they are given in life. This is called ‘Nature Versus nurture’ debate cognitive/constructivist
Piaget believed that the way children think and learn is through their ages and stages of development. This is because learning is based on children's experiences which they build up as they become older. Children's experiences change they adapt to what they believe such as if a child can only ever get to see green apples then the child will believe that only green apples exist. For children it is important that they extend their experiences in order to learn more new things in life. Psychoanalytic Freud stated that our personalities are made up of three parts these are the id, the ego and the superego.
