Riding on ambulances and volunteering at the squad provided much-needed insight into the field and taught me valuable skills, such as patient care and effective communication. Several minutes into surgery after the use of both a saw and bone cutters, I could feel the sense of satisfaction in the room as the tail was successfully amputated from the six year old German shepherd. Observing the surgeon, pleased by how the surgery had gone suture the skin around where the highly infected tail used to be I was once again reassured that veterinary medicine is the course I wish to study. l believe that being a vet is a diverse, challenging yet rewarding career, as there is no other career in the field of medicine that requires you to be an optician, surgeon, dentist and internist all in one day.
