At the start of Senegal, Senegal’s indigenous people were hunters, but by about 3,000 BC they had discovered to farm. Approaching 500 BC learning of how to construct iron tools gotten to West Africa. Through 500 AD an intelligent civilization began in Senegal skilled of construction building stone circles. Towns and trade prospered. In the 13th century the Empire of Mali involved much of western Africa including Senegal. Nevertheless the power of Mali declined in the 15th century and Senegal broke up into small territories. In the meantime Europeans were discovering the coast of West Africa. The Portuguese landed on Cape Verde in 1544.
