Frackers, Chambers, and Bourbonniere (2015), states that, Nurse participants perceived power in situations where they brought knowledge, experience, and confidence together to influence decision-making processes in patient care. When I think about where I started, almost two years ago as a brand new nurse in the emergency room, and where I am now, my advancements are great. However, I want to continue to work on my abilities and my continuing education to build my confidence as a nurse. Throughout my career I have always been my hardest critic and although I can exude confidence, I have spent many an hour stressing and questioning my own abilities. Frackers et al. (2015), contends that nurses develop their “powerful self” over time and with increased experience. I know that more confidence will come with time, but I would like to be more proactive in my educational pursuits to help gain new skills and improve on learned skills which will develop my self-confidence as a leader in my field.

Even though I still consider myself to be a novice nurse that does not mean that I cannot still develop my leadership skills as I develop my nursing skills and abilities. Being a nurse means being a leader therefore it is only logical to continue to seek out the opportunities that will allow me to practice and improve these skills. Continually reflecting on my progression will allow me to identify where I am not making progress so I can adapt my current development strategies and refocus on those weaknesses. The leadership role is continually evolving and I must continue to nurture and change my skills throughout my career in order to continue to be an effective
