1. What is self-efficacy and what are some strategies for improving your own sense of it?
Self-efficacy is at the most basic level, your own belief efficiency and effectiveness. It is a measurement of your own ability to complete set tasks and goals. There are plenty of methods of improving one’s self-efficacy, as each method is unique. However, generally, the best strategy is doing something new and/or challenging that requires some basic investment into the task. Having a set goal, challenging yourself to do it, and then actually doing it, will improve one’s sense of their self-efficacy as they just accomplished something difficult (even if they were already good at it). My reasoning for this answer is similar to how people have different perspectives. I think that if you truly believe and think something, you’ll eventually view the world in the same way you believe and think. It’s like brainwashing, except you’re doing it towards yourself. You “brainwash” yourself to think in a certain way by using repeated images and scenarios until your mind has bought into that thought. Once those thoughts have become cemented (even temporarily), you will begin to go through life as if those positive thoughts were your lifestyle. That’s because a different outlook will change one’s actions and in this case, for positivity.

Public speaking can improve self-esteem by improving self-efficacy. In every public speech, there is a goal that the speaker wants to achieve, and whether that goal is met is up to the speaker. If they had a goal in the speech to make the audience laugh and they met that goal, then they would feel more confident in their abilities and self-worth. On the other hand, if they didn’t meet that goal, they may feel like a failure and will, in turn, diminish their self-efficacy and their pride.
