Case Study
Self-Driving Cars Self-driving cars have been considered as a thing of in science fiction for years, but they are quickly becoming something that can be found in reality. Many companies have begun working on these automated vehicles and have been testing them on the streets, some say that, “The self-driving car could be available to consumers in 3-5 years”(Howard, “Google Self Driving Cars”). The thought of self-driving cars may frighten people, but these cars can be very beneficial for people if put on the market for public consumption. Many problems arise when talking about automated vehicles, such as legality issues, privacy, safety, and cost. However, efforts are already being made to figure …show more content…
Different companies will utilize different methods in programming the cars to drive. In the case that different types of automated cars collide, which side will be to blame? If two cars of the same type collide, who would be to blame? In most cases it would follow normal laws for the types of accidents, but then it would go back to the question of should the company be held liable, or the owner of the car? If an accident occurred due to a system failure, the vehicle manufacturing company would theoretically be liable. But according to the Geneva Convention of Road Traffic, a driver must be in the car at all times and be able to control their vehicles (Brandon). This leads to the idea that the human user is still liable for the …show more content…
If the police will be able to do this, who’s to say that others couldn’t do it too? Currently people worry about having their computers hacked into and having their information stolen. Self-driving cars are like large moving computers. People could hack into cars and steal information and may even take control of the car and that can be dangerous. Much of this can be reduced or eliminated through the proper use of technology security features and methods and proactive security on the part of the computers’ administrators.
Then another issue arises with the human user. In a self-driving car, what exactly is the purpose of having a human user? Self-driving cars are supposed to do exactly as their name suggests, which is to drive themselves. What exactly are they allowed to do inside and outside of the car? Is one allowed to have their eyes off the road or are they supposed to keep their eyes on the road and stay attentive at all times? (Martelle). People may be confused about his, but it’s hard to really say when self-driving cars have yet to be something that the public has access
