Self Driving Cars : A Rhetorical Analysis Every day self driving cars are becoming more of a possibility and less a thing of science fiction. With car manufacturers all racing to create the first self driving car, the future may hold safer roads. Unfortunately the speed at which most of these companies are trying to make these invitations could pose a safety problem to people on the road. “The Dangers of ‘Self-Driving’ Car Hype”, Scott Keogh reasons that at the rate car manufacturers are trying to make involutions may make some people worrisome but that in the long run self driving cars will be valued. He points out that “57% of Americans are more worried than excited about the rise of automated vehicles” (Keogh 1) and that “54% believe that it will making traffic worse” (Keogh 1). This illustrates that while self driving cars may be the direction America is moving, not everyone is on board with the idea. It points out that many believe it will make life harder, making the reader feel that since a majority of population feels that self driving cars are a problem, then something must be wrong with them. Next he declares that auto manufacturer tend to overstate how far the technology has come (Keogh 2). This points out that the companies are trying to hype something that is unlikely to come out in the next couple of years so when it is ready to be released it will be something that consumers are excited for so they will sell the product. Keogh eventually tries to quell the fears about self driving cars by explaining that 94% of car crashes are due to human error and that 90% of crashes could be prevented by self driving cars (2). He uses these examples to exemplify the fact even though many people may be fearful of the possibility of self driving cars, it could be beneficial in that, it could preventing injuries and death due to a preventable car crash.
