Self-disclosure is a process of communication by which one person reveals information about himself or herself to another. The information can be descriptive or evaluative, and can include thoughts, feelings, aspirations, goals, failures, successes, fears, and dreams, as well as one 's likes, dislikes, and favourites. The level of self-disclosure differ from person to person ,it can be sharing of hidden secrets or information regarding one’s own culture, values, beliefs, religion or tradition to co-workers or friends or to a client. Reamer, professor of Rhode Island College, “Social workers’ primary obligation is to protect clients and avoid self-disclosure that has the potential to undermine clients’ clinical progress. They should always ask the question, “Whose needs are being met here?” When considering self-disclosure. In the final analysis, social workers must adhere to the maxim, “Do no harm.” I completely agree with the professor, the effect of an action is mostly unpredictable in the same way the effect of disclosing oneself may positively or negatively influence the client.
Reamer further says that a service worker should consider the regulations, agency policies, ethics and standards when considering to disclose his/her personal information to a client. Self-disclosure can occur deliberately or unintentionally. One of the constant dilemmas I face as a Developmental service worker is that I find myself in circumstances where self-disclosure is unavoidable. To cite an example, Ones during my morning shift in the job one of the clients’ parents came in for a visit. They were watching TV in the living room about ISIS. Literally the family started to talk about religion and they asked me what my religion is. I was about to tell them that I was a Christian, but I stopped for a minute and told them that I did not wish to disclose my personal details because it is against my agency policy. The family was not so happy with my reply and they started to say that they are not going to criticise my religion, the family was a Muslim family and they continued the conversation saying that all other religions are fake and Muslims are the only people who will go to heaven rest of the people will go to hell. Even though I felt like defending them, I kept quiet because I knew that it is inappropriate to talk about the religion in my workplace and even if argued it might end up in a fight which will do harm to the client as well as my reputation in the work place .
