The article “Self-Compassion: An Alternative Conceptualization of a Healthy Attitude Toward Oneself, published in the journal Self and Identity examines the concept of self-compassion. Self-compassion is a positive attitude towards oneself and is an essential part of enhancing the feelings of compassion and concern for others and a protection measure against the negative consequences of self-judgment. The author, Kristen Neff, compares the relation of self-compassion to other self-directed mindsets. Additionally, the author breaks down self-compassion into three main components. Recently, using self-esteem as a primary measure of psychological health has been criticized, self-esteem stems from one’s internal measure of self-worth and is based on judgments and comparisons with others. The article states, “…an over-emphasis on evaluating and liking the self may lead to narcissism, self-absorption, self-centeredness, and a lack of concern for others.” Low self-esteem is well known to lead to a negative outcome, additionally it is difficult to enhance one’s self-esteem. (a) self-kindness: extending kindness and understanding of oneself rather than harsh judgment and criticism, (b) common humanity: seeing one’s own experiences as part of the lager human experience rather than seeing them as separating and isolating, and (c) mindfulness: holding one’s painful thoughts and feelings in balanced awareness rather than over-identifying with them. These components interact and enhance each other and by studying these components it is possible to cultivate a positive mental approach to deal with negative experiences.
