Our interest in recreation and leisure reaches across dividing lines of age, geography, income, gender, and ethnicity. Leisure and recreation gives us something in common—a shared language. Today as a society, we are confronted with a number of serious health and social issues—obesity, depression, diabetes, and suicide to name a few. This is becoming an issue that is leading to many health and social as a society. Recreation and leisure has a language that is easy for spectators to participate and access in addressing these alarming health and social trends. Today, we are seeing a growth in linking recreation and leisure to bettering our overall mental, physical, and societal health. Today’s leisure and recreation has the impact to educate our society starting with youth to promote active and healthy lifestyles. Throughout history, society has allowed recreation and leisure to help promote social bonds by uniting individuals, supporting health issues, and encouraging cultural sensitivity. Free time can sometimes be an end goal for working individuals who are all work and no play. Today’s society offers many recreation and leisure, but we are becoming a society that looks down on those with free time. Children’s free time or recess, has continued to decline in education around the country. When most individuals look back at their favorite memories, we think of childhood games. Some may recall arguing over a neighborhood pickup game, or creating an imaginary world. The opportunities that youth for future generations have for play are not going to be the same as I once had. Free time is in short supply for children and adults these days that the lifelong consequences that can be more serious than society realizes.
