Schumann’s Involvement in Resurrecting J.S. Bach As editor and writer for his own music journal, Neue Zeitscrift für Musik, Robert Schumann made it his personal mission to write about worthy composers and lift them up as examples to the music community. He brought Brahms and Chopin to Germany’s notice, because he felt that their music was “honest craft.” When Schumann discovered the works of J.S. Bach, he readily used his literary platform to inform the public Bach’s worthiness.…

The huge number of cantatas or rather church music composed is due to his fulfilment to the church services on Sundays, meaning Bach had to compose one cantata every week. This was mostly done in his first three years in Leipzig. In 1723, Bach was appointed Cantor of the Thomasscule at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig and he composed music for four churches in the city, the St. Thomas Church, the St. Nicholas Church, the New Church, and the St. Peter’s Church in order of the extent he wrote for these Churches. One of Bach's more recognizable musical inabilities as a child was that he was unable to play a keyboard instrument. After Bach's parents died in 1996 Bach moved to Ohdruf where he later learned the keyboard. Bach was mostly self-taught on how to compose by copying and studying his older brother's manuscripts. However, he quickly transferred to the position of organist of a church in Arnstad, where he wrote some of his first church cantatas (i.e. Denn du wirst meine Seele nicht in der Hölle lassen). Unfortunately, Bach regarded his choir as disgustingly incompetent, and, after neglecting his duties for four months to travel to hear the renowned Dietrich Buxtehude (without explanation), he was severely reprimanded and encouraged to move elsewhere. As fate would have it, Bach was appointed organist at the Church of St. Blaise in Mühlhausen in 1707, only to come in conflict with his pastor, who, as a supporter of Lutheran Pietism, advocated for simplicity over Bach’s ornate style. Bach married his second cousin, Maria Barbara, that same year but quickly moved on to Duke Wilhelm Ernst’s court in Weimar. From 1708-1717, Bach composed a wealth of organ music, from preludes and fugues to chorales and toccatas, including the famous Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor.…

During the medieval times, which was the period between c1150-c1400, the music created started out in the form of a monody, which meant music was written as a single line. This is the earliest period where we can be pretty sure of how the music that survived actually sounded. The manuscripts for music during this time were often influenced by religion through the churches, which was a common place of learning. It was during the 11th to 13th century where monody music turned into organum music, music written with multiple lines. Although the music began to change, the rules regarding rhythm and melody were rather strict, which repressed the organum music and led to the Ars Nova period, which took up the 14th century; this music was mostly performed…

To begin, Bach was a devout Lutherian, who played music for the church (Sherrane). Toccata and Fugue, a two-part musical piece composed for the organ (generally speaking, the instrument most associated with the church), is assumed to have been created with spiritual intent (Schwarm). Bach 's duties for the church included making religious music, which combined with his faith, and musical passion make it likely this piece was crafted for sacred purposes. Bach not only made this piece to accommodate the church 's needs, but also the musical standards of his time period. In terms of technicality, "Fugue", the second part of the piece, was a popular musical technique in the late 1600s and early 1700s, around the same time the piece was created (Schwarm).…
