Time in comics is communicated though a variety of ways. The communication of time leads to another complex theory McCloud introduces in Understanding Comics. His idea communicates that we use our senses to form a sort of closure when reading comics. It is hard to disagree with McCloud’s statement considering we use our five senses as mechanisms to perceive what is around us, and most of the time these perceptions are unconscious. Closure in comics refers to, “the phenomenon of observing the parts but perceiving the whole” (McCloud, 63). Time is created on comics through different uses of line, spacing, words and art. After reading this graphic novel, it is difficult not to be in awe of the process. There is a lot of time and effort put into the creation of comics, requiring comic artists to posses a lot of skill. Comic artists must have the ability to interpret what will relate best to their targeted audience. McCloud thoroughly analyzes and explains comics in the form of a comic book. Vocabulary, time and the creative process comprise only some of the many elements of comics explained by Scott McCloud. The ins and outs of creating comics correspond with all other art mediums.
