Scott Anderson Leadership Report

In the summer before eleventh grade, I experienced multiple large moments in my life. I got my first job, passed my drivers test, participated in the Minnesota All-State Band, and attended the Scott Anderson Leadership Forum. All of these events were life-changing, but none altered my outlook on life as much as the Scott Anderson Leadership Forum, also known as SALF.

The trip to a camping site in the middle of a Pennsylvania forest- a trip I would never forget- lead me to the discovery of myself and my transition into adulthood. This trip was through the summer camp I have attended for now eleven years; Liberty Lake Day Camp located in Columbus, New Jersey, is my second home. I grew up in this camp, and when I finally reached the age to become a L.I.T, a leader in training, I was eager to undergo the program with my friends I always attended camp with. This trip was a reward to all the hard work we do as L.I.Ts. Little did I know the annual L.I.T trip to the camping site would be life changing.…

Our first retreat was at our church. We had other churches joining us that day for that event; it made me nervous realizing that other people I didn’t know would be there. When my brother and I got there, half of the place was full; eyes following us as we walked to our assigned table. We sat down and I saw everyone talking amongst each other. “I…

I decided that I would take leadership roles throughout high school in order to help serve the less fortunate. As I introduced more extra-curricular activities into my life, organization became more important -- and I was shocked to see how much it helped me save…

The purpose of psychoeducational groups is to teach group members a new skill or provide them with previously unknown information that will be of benefit (Toseland & Rivas, 2012). They specifically work well for functioning individuals who have a lack of knowledge in a particular area (Corey & Corey, 2006). In this group, the purpose was to teach members new communication skills, help them learn how to better manage and express their emotions, and how to improve interpersonal relationships. Psychoeducational groups for adolescents are beneficial because the peer interaction that occurs in these groups lets members observe and try out new behaviours in a controlled, nonthreatening environment (Bore, Hendricks, & Womack, 2013; Sayder, 2008; Van…

Holly O’Donnell stated, “Literature is personal, not just art for arts sake”. This statement put my passion for wanting to teach English into words. Being placed in a class that practiced literature circles, opened my mind to the idea that many feel the same way as I do, due to expressing such a passion for what they read. This activity was an exceptional way to prepare for small group discussion, and in doing so, learn more about our short story, “Small Avalanches” by Joyce Carol Oates. This activity shed a new, positive light for me in regards to small group discussions on literature because I learned more than I did on my own.…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
