Sometimes in life, you should be happy with what you have before you lose it or it is taken away from you for good. This saying I think is the main idea of what really happens to Aylmer. In the “The Birthmark” which was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in the 1800s, has beliefs and ideas that are still a part our of society today. In this world, women are judged for any little flaw that they may have. Hawthorne’s thoughts about science, beauty, and life still play a major part in our lives despite the many different obstacles we face. Gender bias is also displayed in “The Birthmark”. I think that there would be a difference in how a woman would feel after reading this short story verse a man such as Hawthorne. I feel from a girl’s point of view it shows that it is a beauty mark and should have nothing to be ashamed of. However, Hawthorne made it where Aylmer was very offended to the point where he tried multiple times to get rid of it, with the result of his wife dying. But back then women and wives really did not have a voice or opinion. Wives were expected to cook, do house chores, and do as their husbands say, even if they did not agree with it. In this story, Georgiana lost her life all because of a little flaw that her husband did not approve of. This shows that Georgiana honored her husband and that women were kind of mistreated during that time. In today’s society mean and women share equal roles and are viewed the same.
