Plants are one of the most diverse and important organisms that live on this planet. They provide us with energy, clean air to breathe, and sometimes even valuable, life-saving medicine. It seems fit, then, that we should know more about these incredible life forms and how we can grow them in our own backyards. To fully understand the being of the plant, we must first look in the micro world of the plant cell. There are three distinct parts of the plant with different cell shapes and types: root, stem, and leaf cells. Each of these cells is essential in its own way. Take root cells for example. They are specially designed to absorb nutrients and water from the ground. There are three main nutrients that benefit the plant: nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. Nitrogen helps plants grow, phosphorous protects against plant disease, and potassium prevents plant stresses. Cells in the leaves contain chloroplasts which captures energy from sunlight. Through a chemical reaction, sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide are combined to produce glucose, a sugar that provides most of the energy that plants use. A byproduct of this process is oxygen, which is essential for other organisms’ survival. This entire process is called photosynthesis, in which plant cells make …show more content…
Their properties have been known by early civilizations long before the first pyramids were built. Onions, a well-known vegetable, have been eaten since the days of the Sumerian civilization. The Navajo people used onion skins to make dyes, and many ancient people found onions to be a staple crop during the frigid months of winter. Today, it is known that many vegetables can greatly improve your health. For example, the spear-like asparagus prevents cancer, while garlic lowers cholesterol levels. Celery and onion both help with high blood pressure, and rhubarb root has long been used for its healing
