I was formerly unassociated with any mental health disorders other than being around individuals who suffer from anxiety. I have been introduced to the concept of schizophrenia as well as how it relates to other mental disorders and how it is possible for multiple to coexist and build off of each other. Within watching the film and putting together information obtained not only through class but through additional research it was possible for me to develop a more advanced understanding of how not only an individual suffering from the disorder is affected but how the condition and the person’s actions will affect all of those around them and close to them. A great example of this was how Nash’s family struggled through the hard times of his condition. The process of diagnosis became more clear to me throughout research and how it is different for each case based upon the delay of John’s diagnosis. It is important for those who suffer from mental disorders to have a support system, in the case of schizophrenia in the shape of a caregiver, as it is important for all individuals to have a healthy support system for proper mental health. Medication plays a vital role in dealing with illness and I have discovered how medication is another animal in itself and how it possess an additional threat to the person that is suffering.
