This paper will interpret how children with schizoaffective disorder struggle with their environment, social skills, and more specifically their education. Boyd (2008) stated, that SD is a “complex psychiatric condition, which presents in individuals with combinations of schizophrenia symptoms (hallucinations or delusions) and mood disorder symptoms (depression or mania).” The combination of these symptoms signifies difficulty in conceptualizing, diagnosing, and treatment. Additionally, environmental contributions are minimal for this disorder. Therefore, children with schizoaffective disorder experience negative impacts on the their education and should be provided with school-based interventions. Schizoaffective disorder must either be specified as bipolar type (manic episode with major depressive episodes) and depressive type (only major depressive episodes) (Kuniyoshi & McClellan, 2014). The limitations of schizoaffective disorder occurred when clinicians had issues whether symptoms were compatible with schizoaffective disorder, even in the absence of full criteria for mood episodes (Malaspina, et al., 2013). Individuals describe their own symptoms and explain how they feel; considering the fact that they may communicate from their hallucinations.
