Reinforcement schedules are important to understand in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis, and in the establishment of new behaviors. When examining the task analysis for a new client, it is important to determine the schedule of reinforcement. According to Cooper et al., (2007), a fixed ratio schedule of reinforcement determines how many responses should be completed to produce the reinforcer, and provide a high rate of responding for the high rate of reinforcement (p.306). For example, establishing a FR 4 means that reinforcement will be given after the fourth correct responses. The task analysis in a reading skill can be used to increase the participation in a story. For example, the client may need help to unravel the main points of the story. Therefore, a task analysis can provide smaller steps to break down the information in the book (e.g. write title name, write main idea). The authors stated that applying a task analysis to the adapted story allowed for the client’s to understand the context and content of the story.
