In the story called “A Problem,” Sasha Uskov is going through a trial of convicting at one of the bank's false promissory note, not paying his debts, and now his uncles and Ivan Markovitch, were deciding whether they should pay the money and save the family honor, or wash their hands of it and leave the case to go for trial. Sasha is a child who has no parents and because of that it is the cause of his bad behavior. With no parents to teach him the right or wrong things to do he was in a lot of debt, people didn’t really trust him anymore, and he was called a criminal. My first piece of evidence is Sasha owning lots of debts to the bank or anywhere he is borrowing money from. The reason why Sasha is in trial is mostly because he wasn’t

There are two types of people in the world: the ones who like a definitive ending and the ones who leave it up to their imagination. I consider myself to be the type to leave it to my imagination, therefore I found the epilogue unnecessary information that Dostoevsky could have left for the reader to complete. Part VI ended strongly, it captured Raskolnikov’s psychological regret in realistic manner. The epilogue, in a way, watered down the strength of Part VI. All of the developing relationships and conflicts ended in a ‘happy ever after’ epilogue, decreasing the depth of the whole novel.…

From 1956 to his death in 1970, President Gamal Abdel Nasser controlled the Egyptian country with a strict regime, full of censorship, bribery, and paranoia. Citizens were forced to follow the powerful Arab Socialist Union that Nassar oversaw, with required conformity under the guise of protecting citizens’ rights. One group that received much governmental restriction was theatre artists, as Nasser changed many of Egypt’s private theaters into state-owned. Limitations were being placed on what works were able to be published and performed, leading to many artists’ work going unseen by the public. Certain plays were able to slip past censors, only to be removed mere days past their openings due to their challenging of the regime’s practices.…

The primary locations in Crime and Punishment are made realistic by immersing the reader in details and the direction of the story at the same time. The Hay Market is one example where the mood of the story is captured and is described on page 9 as working “painfully on the young man’s nerves”. It describes the smells as an “insufferable stench” and filled with “drunken men”. The reader’s observations match with the emotions that should be felt throughout the story such as descending into a dimly lit bar is a symbolic way for Raskolnikov to end his innocence. The author’s style quickly brings us to these conclusions.…

Punishment becomes the only way that Raskolnikov can redeem himself in the eyes of Sonia and the moral rules of society. Once he understands that “crime must be punished because it was a crime” then he finds an understanding not rooted in “his future behavior or moral salvation” (Cowley 89, italics in original). Sonia accepts his actions and though she initially rejects what he has done, her “courageous goodness” leads her to what Cowley calls a “loving understanding” (89-90). This form of understanding does not rely on a basis of beliefs and desires, but rather on discovering something in “the justificatory economy of the situation….by turning one’s attention toward the object in a loving way, a transformative way” (Cowley 90). Sonia accounts for Raskolnikov’s actions through a transformative kind of loving understanding that the novel has been building towards.…

If they argue the money = innocence standpoint, use “bad lawyering” instead. The resources of the justice system are often stacked against poor defendants. She takes up financial responsibility for the survival of her younger siblings, her ill mother, and her alcoholic father, choosing prostitution as a form of work.
