Sarah Cornfield Incident

In August 2013, Sarah Cornfield attended Florissant Valley Community College. Sarah was married with four children, and she was the sole caregiver for her disabled uncle. Although Sarah had a full household and was aware that things could become hectic, she was very adamant about furthering her education. Every day, Sarah went to school, came home, took care of her family, and did her homework faithfully for an entire year. However, following the first year, Sarah’s personal life and her education began to clash. The hectic situations that Sarah knew could occur had soon came to light. Sarah’s disabled uncle was in and out the hospital. Her husband, Martin, was hardly ever home. He was always gone to work at four o’clock in the morning and did not return until three thirty in the afternoon. Sarah had to get the kids off to school by eight twenty in the morning because the bus did not run in their area. Sarah’s husband often got off work the same time the kids were released from school. Which resulted in Sarah also picking up the kids from school. After three months of trying to juggle all those responsibilities, Sarah began feeling overwhelmed. Traditional colleges require that the student go to class a specific number of times consistently, at particular times. That may mean changing of the student’s work plan or needing to contact a sitter. However, online classes require that students attend classes a certain number of times throughout the week, yet as a rule, the individual can work the online classes into their calendar at whatever point they need.
