Santiago mentions many times on his journey that as a shepherd, his sheep taught him many things. Santiago notes to himself that, even though they didn't teach him arabic, his sheep taught him something of even more significance, “that there was a language in the world that everyone understood.” (33) The boy used this language to help increase the success of the crystal shop. This mysterious man introduced Santiago to the concept of a Personal Legend, and encouraged him to pursue his. he taught him that the world’s greatest lie is “that in a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives are controlled by fate.”(10) This piece of knowledge helped Santiago to have hope and pursue his dreams even after he was robbed of all his hard earned money.
