Ancient Warriors
2 warriors of the past, defenders of the innocent, thousand of miles apart, nearly the same. When Europe was in turmoil, feudalism developed to create peace and structure. This system was based on lords acquiring large amounts of land, then granting smaller pieces of land to nobles. In return for the land, the nobles promised to fight for the lords if they were called upon. The warriors of Europe were Knights. The warriors of Japan were Samurai. After a civil war, the man with the most power in Japan was the Shogun. In Europe, the Catholic Church held the most power, as most of the population was Catholic. This pledge said that they would assist their higher-ups in fights and struggles when called upon. Both the knights and Samurai commanded their own armies, but would yield and adhere to the wishes of their lords, when the lords deemed it necessary. These pledges were very important in both cultures, and could not be reversed. In Europe these were made binding by legal contracts. In Japan, these were not legally binding, but breaking these agreements were against their codes of honor. Both the Samurai and knights began training at a young age, and the training they endured was very similar (Doc C). Both the Samurai and Knights trained with a wooden sword and learned to ride horses. They also received religious and poetry instruction. By the age of 14, the Samurai became true Samurai in Genpuku. By 14, the knights became squires, but were considered fighting men. Knights would officially end their training at the age of 21. Both the armor and fighting style of the samurai and knight were similar (Doc D). The armor of the Samurai and knights was very heavy. They were made of many iron plates, but the Samurai armor was made of more plates and allowed more mobility. The armor of the Samurai and Knight was made to block arrows and sword. So, with the invention of guns, this ended the use of armor. The main weapons of the Samurai and Knights were both swords. Though, the Samurai also trained with bows. The Samurai and Knights fighting style, armor, weapons, rank, and training was very similar. These were some major similarities, as Samurai and Knights were regarded as warriors during their times.
