Improved Essays
Dear ______,

JSA changes lives, and we need your help! The Junior State of America (JSA) is the largest student-run organization in the nation. This non-partisan organization seeks to develop active citizens for the future through leadership building, community service, and political discussion. South Jersey Chapter members have worked hard to have been named chapter of the year twice and have come in second for the national civic award twice among 10,000 students. Student leaders from our chapter have held regional and state level elected positions and our chapter offers fifteen leadership positions each with distinct responsibilities. As part of our community service efforts, we have raised over $20,000 from benefit concerts, have

The young people are able to voice opinions on political and social issues, refine ideas through debates and thought talks, and attend activism events and mock congresses. At the first annual convention, the students will debate and discuss current issues revolving around the convention’s theme "Opportunities and Obstacles: Fulfilling the American Dream." Its application in today's society will be the central idea which will allow for topics varying from cultural appropriation to the 2016 presidential election. At the Winter Congress convention, students will participate in a mock congress by writing, presenting, and debating legislation. Finally, at the last annual convention of the year, students will debate topics of education, foreign policy, social issues, inequality, healthcare, government spending, and the economy. We will also participate in campaigns, learn about candidates, and make educated votes, as it will be election season for our state and regional elected official positions.

These conventions are so vital to the chapter’s mission that we have established a scholarship fund to cover costs of attendance so that no one will be priced out of the marketplace of ideas. If we raise $15,000, we can send all our members to all three annual conventions. I would ask you to join us in our mission to enrich our students’ lives by giving a gift. A donation to our scholarship fund is an investment in the future, as you will be directly building the next generation of

The most recent Presidential election has consumed the national consciousness. With each passing debate, speech, headline, and commercial, we have been flooded with negative messages that are highlighting all that is wrong with our current and perspective political leaders. We seem to have leaders who are devoid of the character necessary to handle the great challenges that face our nation and our world. It would be easy to sit in a state of despair about the future of our country. I, however, find solitude in knowing that we are raising a new generation of young adults in our schools, such as Nathan Lefeld, who can strive of excellence academically, persevere through adversity, find joy in service to others, and work extremely hard to earn…

This letter is a formal appeal to you for assistance with the tuition fees for continuing my education. I had to suspend my education at HBU (Houston Baptist University) because of the increment in tuition fee; I came from a family with no savings, my mother was a single mother (61 years old going to 62) who raised me in a low-income apartment life, no education nor funds for her ending years. HBU (Houston Baptist University) recently funded a football team in which they did well for their first year, and I believe this is the more reason the tuition fee was increased; I am not an athlete, but it is my wish that my dream of going to school come true. I am currently working but having my dream job will set my life in order forever for I am about entering into a new chapter of my life.…

If there is one thing I have learned from my time as an undergraduate so far, it is that free speech is no longer about sharing ideas or holding conversations, but rather shouting down one’s opposing side. Disagreement is a natural human behavior, but when expressions become heated and motivated by one’s personal beliefs, they also become unproductive. Universities should be places where ideas are discovered and discussed, not where haphazard claims and quick anger should dominate campus dialogues. It is a lesson all young political leaders should take to hear before their political opinions get the best of…

Executive Summary Female students at Rutgers University often are neglected when looking for an open community of women to reach out or relate to. All women face problems such as the gender pay gap, student loans, reproductive rights, violence against women, LGBTQ rights, and women in leadership. These hardships are often looked over or silenced among society. Some assume, for example, that the pay gap exists because women choose to have lower-paying jobs.…

Trash Academy-Joshua Pipe (FINAL) As the forerunners of a new generation and of a new age in world politics and human behavior, the current body of high school students – more than at any other time in history, perhaps – is often subject to pontifications about their unique propensity to change the world. For better or for worse, the pressures of creating solutions to the issues which plague the world at large rests squarely on the shoulders of this generation. One such issue is the gradual increase in global pollution and trash consumption; accordingly, Mural Arts in Philadelphia, through their Restored Spaces initiative, has created Trash Academy, a project with heavy youth involvement centered around literacy in and action toward global…

Introduction The steady decline of youth voter turnout in Canada calls for drastic action to reverse this trend and engage youth with their civic responsibilities to ensure a strong voter turnout that will ultimately arbitrate the health of Canada’s democratic system in the future (Elections Canada, 2011). Political education within formal institutions is perhaps the most penetrative opportunity to reach youth across Canada (Canada’s Public Policy Forum, 2012). Despite this opportunity to access the minds of young Canadians in their most impressionable years, critics frequently accuse the government of not providing an adequate focus on political education within the required school curriculum. With a focus on the Kantian ethics of “means…

In his article, Drummond asks the questions, “Do politics belong in the classroom at all, or should schools be safe havens from never-ending partisan battles? Can teachers use controversial issues as learning opportunities, and, if so, to teach what? And then, the really sticky question: Should teachers share with students their own political viewpoints and opinions?” (Drummond) Drummond brings up some interesting, and maybe even controversial, questions in his article. The subject of politics in the classroom should be discussed because it is such a big part of our world now, since most high school seniors are able to take part in voting.…

The academic system of current society attempts to prepare students for working in the real world. The majority of students are encouraged to pursue studies in areas such as business and technology because it will ensure a high paying job and promote economic growth. Lately, students have begun to question whether studying the humanities are worth the tuition costs, and if a technical or science based major is a better option. Martha Nussbaum, in her essay “ Education for Profit, Education for Democracy”, brings attention to how “the current focus on education as a form of career training fails to teach students the skills necessary to participate in the political process” (61). Liberal arts schools aim to strengthen a student’s range of knowledge through the studies of arts and humanities.…

Dear Members of the Junior Statesmen Foundation Board, It has come to my attention that this year, overnight conventions are seeing a severe increase in the cost to attend. This deeply disturbs me both as an Expansion Agent for the Northeast State Cabinet and a member of the Junior State of America. These rising prices make it difficult for many students to attend, including myself. Furthermore, they come as quite a shock to chapters I am attempting to expand to, making expansion efforts much more difficult than in the past. Expansion is known to be one of the most difficult jobs on regional cabinets.…

I decided to focus my reaction paper on the debate watched in Allgood Hall because it was a chance for young scholars to get together and discuss future social issues. Me and my peers all came together to watch the final election between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton, and I must say it was interesting. When we first walked in the room we were asked different questions about the debate to spark up conversation. It was times where we agreed and disagreed but all in all it was an interesting night. I had never seen people my age get involved in politics because usually we consider it as “boring” and we feel like it doesn’t affect us.…

    Youth Voting Problem

“Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting” -Franklin D. Roosevelt. With the rise of youth voting increasing to 22 million voters in the 2008 presidential and 23 million voters in the 2012 election, still only about half of the American youth population voted in 2008 and 2012. This is a serious problem in our society because young people need to find their voices by getting politically educated and turn out to vote. The only people who can change the shortage of youth voting are the 18-29 year olds who make up that group.…

Question 1: Who Participates In a free, democratic country where everyone has a voice, few segments of the population have the privilege to understand and participate in the political process. Despite the fact that those who are less fortunate can still participate in changing or putting an end to certain laws or policies through social media and e-Activism. Most of the politicians and governmental officials in office are white older men with substantial amounts of money and have higher levels of education which give them more power and political background. Participation rates would continue to be uneven because of the political side of media, financial purposes, and education.…

With the presidential elections coming up in November, students at Saint Michael’s have different views on who should be the next the President. In order to assess where students stand politically and how robust the conversation about politics on campus is, a few interviews were conducted of both students and faculty about how Trump supporters feel expressing their views on campus. Trump supporters at Saint Michael’s usually don 't feel comfortable expressing their political beliefs on campus. Matt Narsiff is a Junior from New Jersey and a Political Science major who happens to be voting for Trump.…
