Sample Case Study Pharmacology

DP is a 64-year-old male patient with STEMI and stent placement 5 year ago. He visited the pharmacy today to pick up his prescription for metoprolol 25mg, 1 tablet once daily and candesartan 16mg, 1 tablet once daily for 90 days. He is also taking ASA 81mg, 1 tablet once daily, atorvastatin 10mg to control his cholesterol level once daily for last 5 years. DP’s normal average blood pressure readings are 120/75mm/Hg. DP weight 82.2 kilogram. He is retired and keep himself fits with regular physical exercise such as cycling for 2hours at a stretch. He understand his medication very well and concern about medication adverse drug reaction such as muscle pain. Couple of years ago he experienced myalgia and he have to stop atorvastatin for few weeks. He don’t remember his creatine kinase at that time. He has no known drug allergy. He consumes 1 cups of tea in the morning and decaf coffee in the afternoon. DP consume a glass of wine every night with dinner. DP’s diet is well balanced with lots fruits and vegetables. Over the time excessive cholesterol build up in the blood vessels and results in the blockage of blood flow. This blockage reduce required amount of oxygen body need for proper functioning and could leads to heart attack, stroke and deep vein thrombosis. (1) Lipoprotein LDL (low density lipoprotein) and HDL (high density lipoprotein) plays and important role in transportation of cholesterol. A high level of LDL cholesterol accumulate within the blood vessel and hardens and narrow the passage. HDL is good lipoprotein which clear the excess the cholesterol in the blood vessels.
