This will effectively treat her infections faster because they will understand when to seek medical help. Also, if the client understands she’s more at risk for infections because her lungs are weaker, she can get vaccines or take preventative measures to reduce the risk of respiratory infections to prevent hospitalization and the worsening of her disease.

(3) Teach the client/family why supplemental oxygen may be needed and oxygen saturation should be monitored to reduce the risk of respiratory failure and keep the oxygen at a therapeutic range because it will benefit the client and assist her to have more energy to ambulate etc…

(1) I will encourage the client to use her medication Atrovent to ease her breathing and also, teach the client and family how to use the medication, the benefits and how to wash the device to reduce the risk of an infection.

(2) I will encourage the patient to perform pursed-lip breathing when dyspnea occurs and especially, when ambulating. This will consist of how to properly use the technique and the mechanism of the technique. Also, the use of controlled breathing to reduce the symptom experienced a lot: productive cough that the client was complaining about because uncontrolled coughing requires more work for the patient and it doesn’t clear secretions like controlled coughing

Sample meal plans taken from the COPD foundation website will be given as well, it has sample meal plans and foods rich in certain vitamins/minerals that are needed in COPD patients. The website will be given, so that the family can refer back to it.

(1) Teaching the client and family about the irritants of COPD will be achieved by simply stating that bacterial and viral infections of the respiratory tract will worsen her condition. Also, smoking, environmental pollutants, indoor allergens/ cleaning products, weather and allergies can worsen the disease. Papers on COPD irritants teaching found in a binder on the floor will be photocopied and given to the family. Also, I will test the patient to see if she learnt anything and repeat myself to accommodate for her cognitive
