Weston is an ecology and evolutionary biology major from Mansfield, Connecticut. As a former student at EO Smith High School, he came to UConn with a familiarity of campus and the surrounding area, which made the transition process less daunting for him. While he somewhat feared going to school so close to home, he is really making the most of what UConn has to offer and does not feel the need to head home frequently. He is studying ecology and evolutionary biology in the hopes of being able to pursue a career in horticulture in the future. Plants have always been one of Weston’s strongest interests and passions, and in combination with the agricultural programs and extracurriculars on campus, he really feels that he can pursue his interests …show more content…
She is not completely sure what major within the Business School interests her, but she seems to be confident that business is where her interests lie. In high school, cheerleading was a major part of Sam’s life, but it is not something that she wanted to pursue in college; one thing Sam was really looking forward to about college was being able to get involved in completely new activities and programs. In class, Sam is extremely polite. She is very mindful of what she says and how she says it, which contributes to her kind personality. Sam participates during facilitator-led and instructor-led days, and her most common form of participation is through questions. When either the instructor or a facilitator asks if anybody in the class has a question, Sam often has intelligent questions that benefit the whole class. Outside of class, Sam seems to be very sociable and has found a core friend group. Sam is not a student who raises any concern and really appears to be enjoying her college experience so …show more content…
He is very involved on the professor led days but disengaged and reserved on facilitator led days. On professor led days he is eager to participate and share his insight on issues, and it is obvious that he enjoys the class. His comments are also very insightful and connect the issues to broader topics. He is very knowledgeable about his major and the field of computer science, and will readily tell you about it if you ask. Because of this, we suspect there is some disinterest and contempt for the facilitator led days, and we are currently trying to schedule a one-on-one meeting to explain the importance of our class. He is not very social with his classmates, so the social climate could also be a problem for him. We are presently trying to figure this out and work to accommodate him so he can get the most out of this

n the book, “They Came Before Columbus” Ivan Van Sertima educates us about how the life of a plant is not a simple matter. Kingsolver’s short essay “Called Out” portrays her fascination with how species of wildflowers managed to withstand Arizona’s harsh desert climate. The Sonoran Desert, usually a rather barren land consisting of dull, lifeless, monochromes, underwent a major transformation as El Nino’s downpours sparked the blossoming of vibrant, ephemeral flowers. Due to the short-lived nature of these plants, they are genetically programed to only blossom under rainy seasons. Unfortunately, Arizona’s deceitful feminine and masculine rains served as a means of trickery into premature blooming among these seeds for the longest time. However, after a millennia of having endured the misleading weather patterns, the seeds began to program for longer dormancy, which…

The most impactful books are those that bring world inside of them to life in vivid detail. In Hope Jahren’s “Lab Girl,” the world brought to life is our own. However, rather than conveying a human-centric story, Jahren focuses on an often-forgotten character: plants. Jahren is a geochemist and geobiologist, and “Lab Girl” is a cross between a memoir and a textbook explaining the intricacies of plant life. The most memorable excerpts are those where plants are personified, from the stories ingrained in wood to the miracles of the resurrection plant.…

Someone like Sam impacted society in a good and a bad way. There could be many good things about what Sam is doing but almost for every good thing he does there is a bad side to it. For example if he is helping someone get into their dream college they could be taking the spot of someone who deserves it. He could affect his town economically because how could some high school kids get $2500? You could only imagine what kids are doing to get that kind of money.…

I believe an ideal NJHS member should be someone with a good character, someone who works well in groups, someone who is passing all their classes, someone who is willing to work before and after school if needed, and someone who is responsible. All of these things are important, because there is not always going to be someone around to tell them what to do and when to do it. So if they have these qualities, they can easily learn to work things out by themselves. An NJHS member should be someone who has a good character because you don't want someone who will just be mean to everyone and be rude when they disagree.…

In his national bestseller, The Botany of Desire, journalist Michael Pollan ingeniously illuminates the ever-changing and perplexing relationship between human beings and the domesticated plant. More specifically, he unmasks the four driving desires of human existence - sweetness, beauty, intoxication, and control - while simultaneously exploring the effects that they have on our lives today. In The Botany of Desire, Pollan utilizes his own personal experiences, witty anecdotes, informational passages of history, and surprising statistics to captivate the reader’s attention while also leaving them to flounder in a state of questioning as he unearths the motives behind human existence. When I moved to North Carolina nearly two years ago, I had an awakening. This was not a feeling I could simply ignore; the awakening came from the spirits of these mountains. Some people have strong connections to the earth beneath our toes, particularly to the spirit that rests here in Appalachia. Living at the beach, with a coastal vegetation, there was not an astonishing amount of biodiversity like we see here in Appalachia. These mountains provide a welcoming landscape for nearly one hundred and thirty medicinal plants to flourish.…

But he soon realized that everyone is connected in a way, even if we don't know it. Regarding the "public issues" and "private troubles," he connects these concepts into his own life by speaking of a dark time of pain and suffering, and to end it all by committing suicide. He even used a bottle of pills as a visual to show that to accomplish the solution of his pain and suffering, was to take all the pills and end his life. Richards brings in statistics of suicide rates.…

Just as many young children fantasize about, I went through a variety of answers to the question of “what do you want to be when you grow up,” from a firefighter to deep sea diving to an astronaut, until I began to develop my true passion for agriculture. Being a student in an agricultural education class at my middle school many years ago began to open my eyes to the vast agriculture industry. Although not necessarily a bad thing, many of these programs today are focused on educating students on STEM concepts in agriculture. Very few are seen solely as “farming education” programs today, so I consider myself lucky to have had an instructor who was a retired production farmer from the Midwest who taught me real agriculture along with the scientific…
