There was a trail established in the 1830’s that went from Missouri to Oregon, it was called the Oregon trail. Americans were taking this trail for hopes to find resources and an opportunity for a better life. Americans taking the trail ended up discovering California, seeing its deep water ports, and realizing they want this land. The only problem is that Mexico owns it. This desire to have control over the deep water ports of California eventually helps lead to the Mexican American war. Not too long after Americans discover California, the United States marks the border of Texas along the Rio Grande river April on 25th 1846. This makes Mexico angry because the Rio Grande is very important to them, and this is not where the border should have been drawn. When U.S. troops went down to claim the border there was lots of bloodshed which was the final straw for the Mexican American war. The Mexican cowboys living in California put up a good fight but the U.S. defeats Mexico quickly and ends the war. Senator Calhoun gave a speech shortly after the U.S. wins the war saying that we are about to take all this land and let these people who aren't white live in the Unites States. They are schools that effectively turn Indians into white people. Henry Pratt said, “Kill the Indian, save the man.” This was the idea of the Indian boarding schools, the United States government wanted Indian culture to disappear from America. This Idea of getting rid of Indian culture and creating a white society is exactly what senator Calhoun wanted many years before in 1848. Before and After photos of the children who were sent to the Federal Indian Boarding schools shows the kids going from Native Indian to White. The boarding schools were turning the native Indians into the white popular culture, much like the propaganda on T.V. in the 1960s tried to do. The Federal Indian Boarding schools found it effective to get the children while they are young, give them new names, and teach them American trades and lifestyle. In 1979 the first Federal Indian Boarding school called “Carlisle Indian School” was opened, and shortly after many more began to pop up in the west. The federal government would take people kids away from their family against their will and put them into these schools far away from home to break their culture.
