A large part of the book is dedicated towards highlighting the experiences of the patients at PMH and thus provides narratives of various people in the ward. Now, one side of the social experience is due to the compact size of the clinic. In a situation where families are washing dirty wounds, nurses are looking after the relatives in the ward, and beds are lined up close to one another, the setup makes it difficult for patients to ignore the rounds of vomiting after chemotherapy. This environment is made further unbearable with recurring amputations resulting from an inflow of patients with late-stage cancer. Although morphine and codeine are rather inexpensive, they are always in a short supply at PMH, leading Livingston to depict the overlooked issues of pain in Botswana and an overall invisibility of cancer in Africa as it trails the HIV/AIDS epidemic.…

In addition, the doctors and nurses felt that they were superior to their patients and had more power and control since they were employed by the hospital; therefore, they thought it was not necessary to consult with the patients or their families about their decision of who would be evacuated first. From this scene, I learned that health care providers should never dehumanize their patients under any circumstances. In addition, health care providers should treat patients with respect and…

Personal Statement Growing up in rural Colombia in the midst of the coffee region where individuals from all over the country, especially indigenous and those with limited resources would come to tender the coffee fields, I realize now that it gave me a view of how healthcare is not a right but a luxury. The political turmoil and my brother’s health condition forced us to flee our beloved country to seek help in a foreign, unknown land: The United States. After almost three arduous years of all of us going in and out of hospitals, my brother got the surgery he needed and his life was changed forever. Soon after, I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis and my life now changed. Being young, not even fifteen years old, and dealing with a condition…

In his clinic I met a particular type of people that I would normally not see in the city, and I noticed details such as the way they act, they way they speak, and even the way they smelled that was detestable for me at the time; thus, I asked my dad why he chose to rent a clinic so far away, and deal with people who were so different. To this day I still remember my father’s response “A doctor does not segregate”. Reflecting on this response, I later realized that if my father was not the person to challenge his own comfort and rent that clinic, the villagers would have had an even more limited access to doctor. Furthermore, I realized the deep extent of a doctor’s role in a patient 's life as my father would often receive gifts such as fruits and dairy from the villagers. During my time in Persia besides my father, who set an example for me as a doctor, my mother who is a midwife also manifested to me the capabilities that a doctor must have.…
The main topic of this essay is comparing and contrasting the short story The Medicine Bag and the video “ Apache Girl’s Rite of Passage”. One important feature of the story is how Martin's feelings are described and how and why they are changing gradually from plain comfort to deep embarrassment to nervous unrest to strong pride toward his grandpa and the medicine bag. Also, an important feature of the video is how camera angles, music, special effects, and dialogue go together to set the general mood of the video for the viewers. These and more details will be used in comparing and contrasting the short story The Medicine Bag and the video “ Apache Girl’s Rite of Passage”.…
My gut sank to an unbearable low as I watched my thirty-two-year-old mother require support to limp just five steps to the restroom; cancer stripped her of life. At twelve-years-old, I felt distraught in my inability to save her and return the endless love that my Haitian parents poured into my nurturing. However, the hope the physicians brought us has inspired me to become a doctor so that I, too, can serve as an envoy of hope to sufferers of illness. My father is a physician I strive to be like. Every patient always has a smile on their face after seeing him because he does not only treat diseases: he treats people.…

Many people see health in different ways, this essay will look at two concepts of health, the biomedical and the social medical, and evaluate them. This will try to give a more rounded look at the approaches, the problems they can show and the things that are not taken into consideration. To be able to do this we first need to be able to define what ‘health’ is. This term can be described in many ways; the English dictionary defines health as “the general condition of the body or mind with reference to soundness and vigour:” (oxford English dictionary……….). This is a vague definition to an overall understanding of what people believe to be healthy.…
