Salsa Dance Concert Report

I attended the 7th Baltimore Salsa Bachata Congress. It is the premiere Salsa event held in Maryland during a weekend in April. There were salsa dancers from across the country to celebrate their passion for Salsa, Bachata, Zouk, and Kizomba. The dancers represented different Latin ethnic groups. There were several dance performances, pool parties, dance workshops, dance class instructors and different type of vendors selling various things such as clothing, food, and musical cds. There were three days of full events. The prices varied from twenty to two hundred dollars with an option of buying an all-day pass. However, I decided to watch one performance and attend a dance workshop that taught salsa. Today, salsa remains the most widespread style of dance music in many Hispanic communities. Salsa is a mixture of Latin genres, Spanish and Afro-Cuban musical elements (salgente.com). The live performance was breathtaking. I felt the ability to read the emotions and feelings of the dancers as I watched the performance. It was a true and invigorating experience. The dance class was unplanned; however, the performance blew me away. I wanted to learn the salsa. It was a fun learning experience despite being a little challenging. It was a stress reliever once I took the advice to let go. The trainers were …show more content…
These two cultural events were an amazing period of growth for me professionally and personally It has been a challenge trying to find a cultural event for the Hispanic culture. Most of the culture events are held during the warm seasons. I reached out to friends, organizations and searched the web for events. I had to travel to a local state for one event and the other event I learned from visiting a community center in the area where Hispanics reside. The language is a huge

The Chicano Park day was eventful because of the community getting together to celebrate the culture and park. It was impressive to see the amount of people that attended the event and how diverse, especially because of the community it is located in I expected it to be particularly the neighbors. In association to the news and the elections, it is important to see the amount of support that the Mexican culture is receiving and together they can withstand anything. On my walk to the park I noticed that it was going to be crowded because of there not being any parking so we had to park down at the trolley station. This is my first time down there for this event, it was impressive because I would have never thought that due to the amount of people…

I appreciated the effort and music the mariachi group gave in their performance. I noticed how the trumpet usually took the main role while the violins supported the trumpets voice, usually by pizzicato. The guitar and guitarrón were mainly the background music that played the same rhythm over and over. It made me realize the beauty of…

I will start this by being brutally honest, I tend to indulge myself in things others would refer to as “mushy crap”; ice cream, boy bands, badly written romance novels, all things I enjoy, along with Waitress. The musical based closely off of a 2007 film of the same name, opened on Broadway in April of 2016 and has been experiencing a successful run so far, with a tour scheduled for 2017. I had the pleasure of seeing Waitress this summer, in early July and, admittedly, shed a tear or two, or twenty. The journey to Broadway began with a workshop in 2014.…

For my art exhibit portion of this essay I visited the Mexic-Arte museum in Austin, Texas. The exhibit consisted of different paintings, photos, film, sculpture, and displays all centered on the Mexican heritage and focused on the Dia de los Muertos celebration. The Mexic-Arte museum has been in commission since 1984, and has been showcasing the cultural artwork since its opening while expanding the amount art work every year. I learned that the museum also holds street parades during Dia de los Muertos to commemorate and spread the Mexican culture throughout the city of Austin on 6th street. Some of my favorite works I viewed included, that I will discuss, were “La Vida y La Muerte”…

I am happy to celebrate Hispanic culture and discuss the positive influences they have had in our country. The Hispanic population has a strong voice in our country and will not be silenced. For the months of September and October, HASA has hosted several events in which they celebrate and share Hispanic culture with the campus community. These events included “Poems and Picasso” and “Hispanic Trivia Night”. The chair of Hispanic Heritage Month committee, Maria Rendon, stated that it is a “chance as a Hispanic community to celebrate the rich culture, that not only we have in our own countries, but that we have contributed to the United Sates as well.” The celebration of Hispanic culture is also shown in many of HASA’s events, from their meetings where they serve Mexican street corn to their participation in the Fiestas de las Americas parade for many consecutive years. The festival “showcases the beauty, taste, and talent of the rich multicultural heritage found in Oklahoma” (Fiestas de las Americas).…

Over the course of my life I have had experiences that have expanded my cultural bubble. This past month, I have focused in on two experiences specifically. One of these was a lecture I attended in Lagomarcino October 22nd called “SO that Any Child May Succeed – Indigenous Pathways toward Justice and the Promise of Brown" by Teresa McCarty. The other was part of a conference I attended the weekend of October 23-25 called Main Event. I decided to go to the Brown lecture because I felt that I could understand it best, and make connections to class.…

For centuries, song and dance have been a vital part in creating and expressing a community’s sense of identity. Through each, members are able to pass on traditions, make political statements, and express themselves. The tango and salsa styles of music and dance are prime examples of mobilities in Latin American music that help foster a sense of identity among the smaller communities, although each required international attention before earning recognition from its home country. Each style of music is a special hybrid of all kinds of influences, demonstrating a deep history that can also give some insight to the social outlook of the times. Despite the time gap between the emergence of the two styles (tango first appearing in the early 19th century while salsa came into the scene around the 1970s), both styles have contributed a significant impact in establishing a sense of identity among Latin American music.…

I went July 5, 2014 on a Saturday. After all of the bull riding festivities, they opened up the dirt enclosure for people to dance on. We danced to Mexican music such as, Nortenas and Corridos, two very popular forms of Mexican music. When I entered the arena, I saw many people dressed in traditional Mexican wear. As a group, we would create activities that would spread the Hispanic culture. We would accomplish this by volunteering in elementary schools that host carnivals that celebrate the Hispanic culture. This is important for children because as they grow up they start forgetting their family's background; however, these activities ensure that the children are being actively involved in their traditions. One of the activities was to have children participate and also watch folkloric dances. This also provides children with the opportunity to be part of fun activities in a safe manner.…

The performance meant a lot to me because it gave me a whole new perspective in the importance of dancing. The dance represented a familiar scenario which I recognized in professional theaters. This was worth my money and time because I was amused and thrilled with new content. The theme of the dance was easy to recognize because of the performers body language and visual appearance. It basically let me know whether it was dark or happy themed.…
