Sala’s Gift, by Ann Kirschner, is about a girl named Ann, who lives her entire life without knowing the secrets of her mother in World War II. One day Ann’s mother, named Sala, isn’t feeling well. Sala goes to the doctor and finds out she has a condition that is in need for heart surgery. After nearly fifty years, Sala finally allows Ann to ask her anything about the war and presents Ann with all the letters, photographs and diary from her time in the war. Throughout the rest of the book, the story is told through the letters and narration of what Sala was thinking about during the war. Sala is younger is about 18 years old when the war starts. She lived in a house in Poland with her parents, uncle, aunt, brothers and sisters. Although most people think that when you were taken away by the Nazis, that you usually went to a death camp or torture camps. In this book, Sala decides to go to a labor camp to earn money for her family during World War II. The author was very explicit in her description of the holocaust and if she had more book like this one, I would love to learn more. While I was reading, I learned more about the holocaust than any other book on the holocaust I’ve read before. If Ann Kirschner made another book that is as descriptive and eloquent as this one, I would be intrigued to learn more on what the author could share. I hope this author made another holocaust book as well, maybe in the perspective as another character in the story, so I can learn even more about this
