There are a variety of nursing diagnoses that could be used for someone who is at risk of contracting an STD, as well as for someone who is already infected. If I were going to write a nursing diagnosis for someone who is at risk for contracting an infection, I would label the patient as “at risk for infection.” I would most likely use this for someone who is already infected, however, I would include risk of transmission. I would plan my nursing intervention to teach the patient about safe sex practices. For example, the nurse will educate the patient on how to prevent contracting an STD. I would educate my patient about family planning centers where they can obtain free birth control as well as testing. I would also educate my patient on hygine practices that help reduce the spread of infection causing bacteria. If I were to see a patient who has already contracted an STD, I would also educate on the importance of safe sex practices, especially since this person is already infected and could infect others. I would have my patient make a list of all of his sexual partners that they would need to contact so the partner could get tested. If I were to encounter a patient with HIV, many of my interventions would be the same, however I would also need to educate on the importance of taking their medication, as well as the importance of hygiene and how to control the spread of infection by proper cleaning of spilled
