As I was going down a slight hill the car in front of me slammed on their brakes in front of a green light and I couldn’t stop in time. I rear ended the car in front of me and totaled my car. This was the first major accident I have ever been in and of course I panicked and cried though out the whole experience. To my surprise one of my mangers was just getting off work and saw me standing outside because of my red work shirt and helped me until my mom arrived. How the Pursuit of Profit Drives the Test Prep Industry As many people are aware, America is a capitalist society motivated by profit. However, Alexandra Robbins describes in Chapter 13 of her novel, “The Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids”, a specific industry that is driven by the pursuit of profit and that is the test prep industry. Before the new SAT was released the College Board “insisted that students’ scores could not be improved by coaching” (Robbins 299). That didn’t stop places like Kaplan and Princeton Review from making money “prepping” anxious teens.…

Even now, looking back at my whole college process, I wouldn’t change a thing because during that time I had to learn on my own to face rejection from colleges and failure in testing, but still never lose hope. And I didn’t. Mid-summer going into my junior year I discovered and fell in love with Colgate. It was my dream school, to top that off as an athlete being recruited in, I only needed a twenty-four on the ACT, while the average student needed a thirty or thirty-two. I still remember the night before I took the official ACT test, which was at Rasmussen community college coincidentally, I could barely sleep just thinking to myself all I need is a twenty-four…

Since the first day, time has been flying really fast. Starting a fresh new day, meeting the same teachers and same old friends, I still cannot imagine that I am now a senior! In my senior year, there will definitely be a lot of challenges and obstacles for me to conquer, but I believe that as long as I do everything step by step, I can beat down the difficulties in this senior year. When I was in junior year, I often heard last year’s seniors told me how hard is it to come up with a senior project topic, and they kept on reminding me to start thinking of my topic and finding my mentors. Luckily, I had research method class last year, so I knew how to do my APA style references and I had many presentations experiences last year.…

Three years elapsed, and with those years gone, so were my hardships. The start of my fourth year marked the turning point for me and what made my final year in high school a memorable one. Unlike the years prior where my opinion didn’t matter, my senior year was when I was finally recognized and praised for my abilities. I felt like I was an asset to the team rather than someone who was just taking up space. I was given first priority when the time had come to pick numbers.…

"The SAT is not perfect. We all know smart, knowledgeable people who do badly on standardized tests” (Postrel 1). Even some of the wisest people have agreed that the SAT and other standardized tests are not valid indicators of a student's potential for success in college. In fact, they have said that standardized exams can be counterproductive for students trying to study to become better students in high school and improve their appeal to colleges. Colleges should not be allowed to use standardized exams as a main indicator of college readiness.…
