There is a joke within the teaching community that goes “What are the three main reasons for teaching? June, July, and August”. While some teachers may find this joke funny, parents of children are trying to figure out what their children will do in June, July, and August. S. Originally, it was based on the Agrarian calendar when children were needed as farm hands during harvest seasons. It is obvious that we live in a different era than the 1800s, most people see summer as a time to unravel from the school year and enjoy a little bit of leisure, but today this idea is fading. This generation is unique to those before it, because of the forces of globalization and technology academic competition is increasing at rates never before seen.…

Once the school year rolls around, the teachers have to be prepared to reteach old material which was obliterated over the summer by their students. Year-Round Education introduces a constructive solution to this issue. A year-round school attends the same amount of days as a traditional school just their days are stretched out among the year. Considering Illinois just became a state, 200 years ago, I believe that it is time for a change in regards to the school system. Just like explained in Year Round Schooling offers Benefits Over A Traditional Calendar, “Balanced year-round calendar provides a logical pacing of instructions, followed by a regular break” (Bullinger, 2008). One bad thing is that if we increase the schooling time the teachers salaries are increased (Davis, 2008), it’s not bad for the teachers but the state is losing more money. The schools will need more money to pay for the bills and pay the teachers as explained in Extending-Time Schools Benefit Students, “They shift usage of grants, or apply for new money that can be used in a variety of ways” (Davis, 2008). A benefit for the students is that their education isn’t interrupted (Bullinger, 2008) according to Year Round Schooling Offers Benefits Over a Traditional Calendar, “Year round schooling enhances learning because the learning is not interrupted by a long summer break” (Bullinger,…

Low enrollment for 10-11 weeks has a negative impact on summer revenues which cause teachers to be laid off without pay. The business continues to survive through these difficult months; however, much summer budget planning and forecasting are conducted prior to summer months. Not only careful budget planning is imposed during the summer months, PCA recognizes that during summer vacation, many students have the chances of losing knowledge and skills (McCombs, Cross, Lichter, McInnis, Bodilly, Schwartz, and Augustine, n.d.) Children benefit from year round school because they are not in a hurry to cram everything they need to know for that year in just short nine to ten months. Teachers can slow their speed and actually teach students everything they need to know not just what they need for a test, which seems to be regular in many schools. Students will not forget the education that was taught, for they will not have summer vacation time to forget about school and what they learned from it. Cooper had done experiments on children loosing education while on summer break and his results are stunning, and cooper commented that “most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months”…
