It all started with the 1964 Rubella epidemic, doctors advised that patients abort their babies due to the exposure to rubella. From these abortions the rubella vaccine was cultivated from the fetus tissue containing the active rubella virus. Hepatitis A and B, chicken pox, and rubella all originated from this aborted fetal tissue. This fact alone has stirred controversy with many religion’s views on vaccinations. One widely held religious view about vaccines is that the human body is a temple made as God intended, and that vaccines violate this belief. Parents Rotells and Leibovitz refused to give their second grade daughters the hepatitis B vaccine because of their religious views. The girl’s school required the hepatitis B vaccine, their lack of vaccinations resulted in expulsion. CPS, child protective services, became involved since the girls were not attending school. The life of one no matter how precious is less than the life of many. I agree not all vaccines are necessary, this overlap of vaccines for illnesses eradicated and/or close to eradication allows for the exceptions of those with medical, religious, and philosophical contractions. If this margin of overlap were to change, like in the example that took place in San Diego where a foreign or close to eradicated, in a particular region, disease emerges due to unvaccinated people precautions may need to be taken where restrictions on exemptions are heightened. In no way should religious, philosophical, and medical reasons be admissible, but definitely reviewed rather than overlooked. New vaccines should not be made mandatory any time soon so as to view the long term effects and risks, which is why only well-established vaccines should be the only ones enforced as mandatory at public facilities.
