December 1st, 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. Rosa “The mother of civil rights” worked as a seamstress, on her way home she stepped onto the bus as usual. She took a seat in the first row of the black section. When a white man asked her to get up she refused. Shortly after that she was arrested. After the African American community heard about her arrest they protested Alabama's racist segregation laws. They did not ride the bus for 381 days. During this time the buses went out of business because only whites were riding. Instead of riding the bus blacks would create a carpool or walk.
