Roof Truss Design

Improved Essays
The development in the construction industry has made engineers, architects and designers very creative and ambitious in building projects. The designs are becoming innovative and attractive. To achieve this, tremendous amount of weight placed was on materials leading to their inability to bear this significant weight. Consequently, to be able to achieve the structural design and strength engineers developed the truss. Trusses are web-shaped structures that are able to bear tremendous weight. They are used in buildings and bridges of all sizes. Trusses allow engineers to extend the dimensions of structures and create interesting shapes. Roof truss design is a structural framework mainly triangular in shape, used to bridge the space above a …show more content…
The lumber trusses are of high quality and are able to tolerate high amount of stress as they are stress rated by machines. Where as plates are sturdy pieces of galvanized steel, used to hold wood together at joints. Plates help transfer stress from the wooden beams of the tress to the joint. This allows the truss to tolerate more weight.

All construction structures make use of trusses because of the additional support and strength that they provide. Triangular shapes are stable because the length of the sides of the legs and the measure of the angles correlate, making it difficult for triangles to lose their shape. Trusses are able to resist the force of a great deal of weight because a downward force applied to the corner of a triangle can be easily diffused throughout the shape. This sturdy feature of triangles makes this roof truss design structure common in engineering and architecture.
Different types of Wooden and Steel Roof Trusses:
• King Post Truss: is mainly a wooden truss. But can be built in combination of both wood and steel. It can be used for spans upto 8m.
• Queen Post Truss: is a wooden truss and can be used for spans upto 10m.
• Howe Truss: is made of combination of wood and steel. Where the vertical members or tension members are made of steel only. It can be used for spans from 6-30m.
• Pratt Truss: is made of

A good number of trials had been carried to test the chains of the suspension bridge while noting down all the yield and possible failure loads by Thomas Telford. Too much time was taken on testing of the chains that little attention was paid to how the light and flexible roadway might react during strong and fats winds. A large number of remedial measures were to be applied which included tying down cables that snapped soon after installation, bumpers and inclined stay cables that all seemed to bare no fruits. The oscillations it received in relatively light winds was attributed as one of the major causes of its collapse. The oscillations were due to the wind vortex shedding in the bridge deck.…

When truss bundles are delivered to the construction site they should never be placed flat on the ground. Instead, they need to be elevated in order to ensure that they do not come in contact with any water or excess moisture. The bundles can be elevated using blocking that is designed to elevate the truss bundles a few feet off the ground. When installed correctly pitch trusses are the features that really pull a home together. If neglected truss bundles can easily damage before the installation process begins.…
