Romeo And Juliet

Juliet Character Analysis Act II scene II is one of the most famous passages of all of Romeo and Juliet. In this scene, dubbed the balcony scene, Romeo and Juliet declare their love for each other. Upon Juliet’s suggestion, they also plan to marry. Throughout this scene, Juliet begins to show signs of increasing confidence that leads her to take her own path rather than the fate that had been imposed upon her by her family. Juliet is the one to bring up the idea of marriage and even makes practical plans, such as sending a messenger to Romeo the next morning. Juliet also requests that Romeo not swear his love on the moon because it is too ‘inconsistent” and “variable. She wants Romeo to show her his true feelings in a genuine way instead of using the traditional poetic form in expressing his feelings for her. Juliet compares Romeo to a rose. Her thoughts were along the lines of, if a rose us called by another name, it is still a rose in essence and soul. Even if Romeo denounced his family name, he would still be the same Romeo that he is now, the Romeo that she loves and the Romeo that loves her. Juliet wishes for Romeo to “refuse thy name” and in return, she will “no longer be a Capulet.” She knows that they are not defined by some arbitrary noise. A name is nothing but that, a noise that humans have added meaning too. A name is neither “hand nor foot not face.” Juliet feels that her family name should not define whom she can and cannot love. While their love blossoms unchanged by any obstacles that lie in their wake, their families feel that they can impose their hatred for the other family onto their children in order to keep them
