3.2. Romeo and Juliet themselves
As we all know, Shakespeare's tragedy ends with Romeo and Juliet commiting suicide. Romeo deliberately takes the poison after he thinks that Juliet is dead. After Juliet finds out that Romeo is dead, she deliberately stabs herself with a dagger. That is the reason why they are responsible for their own death, because it was their own choice and nobody told them to do that.
Furthermore, their feelings are another reason for their death. Looking back at the beginning of the play, it becomes clear that Romeo quickly falls in love with women. Paul Jorgensen states, “Juliet has not had to improve; but Romeo, at first a whining lover of himself in the role of lover, passionate but not truly reaching out of himself, has much to learn.“ (Jorgensen 33). He refers to Romeo's passion and lust, which can be seen in the beginning of the play. At first he was deeply in love with Rosaline and blinded by her beauty when he says, “O, she is rich in beauty [ . . . ]“ (1.1. 221). After Romeo feels rejected by Rosaline, he meets Juliet for the first time and they fall in love with each other. That willingness to die for each other if they can not be together is a wrong attitude, which causes tragic results. A mature attitude might have changed their lives. Stauffer states, “the dangerous fault of the two lovers is their extreme rashness“ (Stauffer 30). He refers to the fact that it was Romeo's and Juliet's fault to not think about their actions and that they should have tackled the problem in a wiser way. Additonally, Romeo and Juliet should have listen to Friar Laurence's advice, „Wisely, and slow; they stumble that run fast.“ (2.3. 94).
