Delacroix painted a dramatic story that celebrates the heroic struggle of the general populace. With the outstretched figure of liberty, the vibrant, bold fighters in contrast to the lifeless dead casualties in the foreground, the defiant poses of the people fighting for liberty, the painting illustrates the striving of the people for their liberty, and allows the viewer to empathize with that strife (Liberty Leading the People, n.d.). The image one choses to show the world indicates individuals’ beliefs and characteristics. I am choosing John Singleton Copley’s painting of Governor Thomas Mifflin and, his wife, Sara Morris Mifflin. There are many reasons that this picture caught my eye but most importantly is the focus is on Sara Morris Mifflin. This is significant, because at that time women where often viewed as an extinction of their husbands. This image shatters that notion because she stares out at the viewer with a cool confidence that commands respect.…

Art can take the form of many styles and still accurately depict the time or the subject that the artist had wanted to create. Although very different in style, both Ernest Withers’ “Sanitation Workers Assemble in front of Clayborn Temple for a Solidarity March, Memphis, TN, March 28, 1968” and Beauford Delaney’s “Can Fire in the Park” are authentic to the time, place, and artist. Withers’ art takes form as a gelatin silver print, a black and white photograph of several hundred black men gather with signs that say “I am a man”. Given the title,”Sanitation Workers Assemble in the front of Clayborn Temple for a Solidarity March, Memphis, TN, March 28, 1968”, the men are most likely waiting for their peaceful protest march to begin, one that…

Romanticism would be taking a situation for what it is not and thinking that it is romantic, exciting, fun, or something that everyone should do. Romanticism is unlike realism in almost every way. Realism is when you take a situation true to life or for what it actually is. We are not always able to tell the difference between them.…
