This essay will discuss the role of international organisations in contemporary global politics. International Organisations may play the role of mediators between two disputing countries which is at a risk of escalating into a war. Another role can be peacekeeping and peace support operations with United Nations playing the lead role. Global security and peacekeeping is lead by one of the principle organs of the United Nations, the United Nations Security Council. The Lusaka Ceasefire Agreement was signed by DR Congo and the five regional states (Angola, Namibia, Rwanda, Uganda & Zimbabwe) involved in the conflict. In 2006 the UN peace operations team known as MONUSCO helped DR Congo to hold the first free and fair elections ever. The UN peace team stayed their after the elections with devising tasks on military, rule of law and politics. With violence continuing in the province North Kivu a peace agreement (Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework) in February 2013 was signed by DR Congo, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, the Southern African Development community, the United Nations Secretary General and the representatives of the eleven countries in region. Currently the MONUSCO is still present in DR Congo to continue stabilization and peace efforts.
Another major role of international organisations is to eradicate poverty and help nations in natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunami, volcano and droughts.
