An important idea in the film is the role of men and women. Paikea was born into the community of Whangara who believe that the next descendant of Paikea should …show more content…
At the beginning of the film she secretly follows Koro’s lessons. Hemi is one of Koro’s students and he is sympathetic toward Paikea. After their lesson on how to use the taiaha where Hemi impressed Koro with his skill he saw Paikea and told her she wasn't hold the taiaha properly and taught her how to hold it the correct way. So then they start fighting using the taiaha and Paikea beats Hemi by knocking the taiaha out of his hand. A long shot is used to show their size and they were both roughly the same size the only difference was that Paikea was a girl. Just as Hemi lost to Paikea Koro came and saw the taiaha knocked out of Hemis hand. We see that Koro is aggravated from a visual feature of a close-ups of his face showing that he is clearly angry at Paikea and disappointed at Hemi because he was fighting a girl who was beating him at something a boy can only do. After this Koro shouts at Paikea to say Sorry and after she says sorry he shouts at her “say it like you mean it” so she says it again. At this point it shows at close-up of Paikeas face and she clearly looks like she is petrified. This scene showed me that you should always try new things even when things don’t go your way because you never know you might excel in it.
In conclusion the film Whale Rider shows us that the role of men and women impacts on our world because the majority of men mostly have higher up. It shows us that Paikea a 12 year old girl can make a big impact
